Justice for a New Day is a 9-week community education course that explores the history, policies, and human impact of incarceration in America. Through presentations by community leaders, researchers, practitioners, and people with lived experience, participants examine the historical roots of mass incarceration, the realities of the criminal legal system today, and the opportunities to build a more just, healthy, and safe future.

Our purpose is to understand how incarceration has shaped our communities, why Wisconsin continues to experience some of the nation's deepest racial disparities in the criminal legal system, and what role each of us can play in creating meaningful change. By grounding ourselves in history, listening to lived experience, and learning from one another, we can move beyond misconceptions toward solutions that strengthen individuals, families, and communities.

FAQs

Q: What is the design of each session? Will it be similar to how Black History for an New Day was structured?
A: Yes, each session is designed to follow the same structure as Black History for a New Day; approx 60-75 minutes of lecture and/or guest speaker followed by facilitated discussion.

Q: Will there be post-session discussion cohorts? Do I have to attend these?
A: We will have in-person breakout discussion groups for the people who attend the course in person and Zoom breakout rooms for those who attend online. We do highly recommend that people stay for these sessions as so much of the work of processing and digesting the content happens during these sessions. Our research on the effectiveness of our Black History Course also illustrated that these parts of the course experience were critical to learning and community building.

Q: Can I participate on Zoom if I can’t be there in person?
A: We ask that everyone register for the version they can commit to. Our discussion groups depend on this. If there happens to be a time you can’t make it in person, you can join virtually, but we can’t accommodate regular switching.
